Most Clutch Laker Ever?

Who is the Most Clutch Laker of All-Time?

(click on each photo for a youtube compendium
of each player's greatest clutch moments)

a) Earvin “Magic” Johnson

Magic won five rings, beginning with his clutch step-in for Kareem as a Rookie in 1980.  Always phenomenal but at his best at the end of games – you needed the ball in Magic’s hands.

Best clutch moment: The Baby Hook vs. Boston in 1987.

b) Jerry West – “The Logo”

Jerry West played prior to the 3-point line, and was considered the best pure shooter of his (and possibly any) era.  So ice cold that he literally can NOT watch games or even highlights of games in which his team lost.

Best Clutch Moment:  Full-court buzzer beater vs. Knicks in 1969 NBA Finals, sending the series to 7 games.

c) Kobe Bryant – “Black Mamba”

Literally ice cold.  An Assasin.  A killer. Wants the ball when the game is on the line.  Will make the big shot.

Best clutch moment: Take your pick: 81, Kobe vs. Sacramento, Kobe vs. Portland. . .

FYI – West’s performance in that NBA Finals, along with that full court shot got him the Finals MVP…the only player to ever win the Finals MVP for a losing team…

So I watched the videos you linked to, as requested, to make my decision…

I think at least three of Magic’s top 10 were buzzer beaters at the end of quarters, not the end of games…I don’t know if that’s clutch because there’s very little repercussion if you miss… And his hook shot against the celtics didn’t make the list?!

As for Kobe’s 8 min long video, it seemed like 70% of the shots were with like 1:30 left and the Lakers with a 6 pt lead. Definitely clutch to finish strong like that, but I still thought the selection was odd to not include that many true winning shots, especially considering the multitude to choose from.

To be honest, West’s footage was too hard to see to evaluate.

Considering all of the above, I’m voting Magic, but that could be heavily influenced by Chick calling all his shots. It just makes it so much better!

    Kobe without a doubt.

Who else would you want to have the ball with the game on the line?

P.S. If you had to choose one of the following situations…..Would you rather be Kobe accused of rape or Tiger exposed for being with 15 woman and counting?

What? No Fish? No .4? No taking over (with Ariza) in the final last year v. the Magic getting in that pivotal game? Is there a rule against role players?

  5. Lance

Seriously though….Magic no doubt. Played 1 through 5, won 5 rings and had a look at even more. Ran the offense. Neither Kobe nor the Logo can say that

WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU SERIOUS THERES ONLY ONE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION AND I THINK WE ALL KNOW WHAT IT IS

JERRY WEST GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK ANYONE WHO PLAYED WITH SHORTS RIDING UP THEIR ASS AND BEFORE THE CROSSOVER WAS INVENTED IS DISQUALIFIED FROM THIS TYPE OF CONVERSATION YES IM TALKING TO YOU WILT TALLER THAN EVERYONE CHAMBERLAIN

MAGIC WAS PRETTY GOOD I GUESS BUT AT HIS BEST RUNNING THE FASTBREAK NOT EXACTLY A CLUTCH SCENARIO AND THAT HOOK ISNT ON THE LIST CAUSE A HOOK ISNT A REAL SHOT CASE IN POINT WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SAW ONE IN AN NBA GAME OR EVEN A PICKUP GAME FOR THAT MATTER

KOBE IS THE FUCKING MAN ALL DAY HE OWNS IT BRO HE OWNS YOU AND ME AND EVERY TEAM IN THE LEAGUE LIKE A HUGE TOWER OF OWNAGE OVER THE WHOLE LEAGUE INCLUDING BITCHASS LEBRON GAYASS STEVE NASH AND PUNKASS DWAYNE WADE FIVE RINGS THIS YEAR WATCH IT HAPPEN BITCHES

I would have to say, KB24 definitely. Defense and rules before are now much different. The game has evolved to a global sport. And so Kobe to be able to create and make the shots he makes, to me makes him the most Ultra Clutch player ever.

    Easy – Kobe Bean Bryant!

The type of defensive schemes he faces night in and night out. The double teams he faces, the level of athletes he faces. I can go on and on.

First of all, how can anyone say “Kobe easily is the best clutch Lakers player”? I’m not saying Kobe is not the best, but this decision is tough. Magic’s sky hook in the Boston Garden was EPIC. Jerry West full court heave in a close-out finals game?

What about Big Shot Rob against Sacramento, Portland, and Phila?

    D Fish’s .04 against them Spurs….and his clutch 3s against the Magic?

These are all phenomenal clutch plays that deserve equal accolades. However, what about Kobe against Phoenix 2000? Kobe’s 2 three pointers against Portland 2004? Kobe’s 81 (the entire performance was clutch…not any particular play stands out)? Kobe’s clutch performances after his court trials? Kobe’s 2 huge 3 pointers at the end of game 4 against Phoenix 2006? You see, the difference is there are way too many Kobe clutch moments so he gets the nod over Jerry West.

  10. Lance

Clutch doesn’t just mean shooting. Fillin in for the Cap in the Finals as a rookie and leading the Lakers to a title. As clutch as any shot.
